ON THE FARM

We can’t believe how October went from having a heat wave at the beginning to now having some of the chilliest days and nights, but it’s a sure sign that winter is on the way. We are keeping ourselves fuelled and warm by eating lots of spelt flapjacks and brownies – naughty, but oh so very nice! And there is nothing nicer when you get home from work on a cold dark night to whip up a steamy hot Speltotto. We have taken to adding this seasons leeks and sweet potatoes from the vegetable garden, but we would love to hear your recipe ideas. We will choose one recipe per month that is sent in by our spelty followers and send them a yummy box of goodies, so get cooking!

Next years spelt seed was planted at the beginning of October, and I am pleased to say it is already poking out of the ground! A good frosty winter and a warm spring will help us ensure a great crop next year!

Remember, remember the 5^th of November! so, we have been thinking of some disgustingly delicious ideas, and our favourite is to melt a marshmallow between two shortbread biscuits.... sounds sweet, we’ve not tried it yet, but would love to hear your delicious Bonfire night wamers!!   For those with a more savoury palate, perhaps try our delicious Carrot and Celery and Spelt Soup.... the options are endless!!!


Look out for Roger talking about his walnuts on BBC 2 on 15th November at 7pm. 
Earlier this year, we had 'Great British Food Revival' film Roger here on the farm talking about the greatness of Walnuts and all of their healthy benefits, sincethe harvest the demand for our nuts has been huge with just a few kilos of walnuits being sold at Kilver Court Shop.

100gms Sharpham Pearled Spelt, rinsed
750ml milk either full fat or semi-skimmed
50gms unsalted butter
40gms castor sugar
½ teaspoon of vanilla extract
Freshly grated nutmeg

This spelt pudding can either be cooked in the oven as below or just gently simmered in a heavy based sauce pan on the stove top.

150c oven or gas mark 2

Rub a 1 ltr capacity oven proof dish with butter and then gently soften the rest.

Put the pearled spelt, sugar, milk and vanilla extract.

Add the softened butter and then top with grated nutmeg.

Why not add some Blueberries, stewed apple or fresh fruits to enjoy with it!!
